Check-In Post July 24th 2023

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

Today's Question: No question today.

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Having the house to myself, I had planned on speed running through as much of my to-do list as possible today. My back had other ideas. I did get some knitting done and put together an "about me" meme for day 2 of 100 Days of Halloween Happy and got it posted in my journal.

After I'm done checking in here, I'm going to make a list of creative projects I had planned on doing this month and figuring out which ones to focus on getting done, which ones to drop completely, and which ones can wait.

Thanks. Despite the height I must climb to get into it, the new bed situation seems to have all but fixed my back problems. (It seriously gives me flashbacks to being a small child on my grandparents farm trying to get on a horse, not being allowed to use a stool or my arms.)

So far so good :D

Thanks!

It's extremely difficult and I most definitely could not do it now. I could barely do it then. Basically, you use your forearms to balance yourself against the side of the horse as you put your foot in the one stirrup, then push up with your legs and swing wide to mount. (If that makes any sense.) It's technically not using your hands, not not using your arms, but it was always called that. I don't remember the logic behind it, but I remember thinking it was stupid. It was one of those things my grandfather and father were both very adamant about learning to do and if you didn't, no horseback riding for you. Of course, they also thought that one should start learning to ride when you were old enough to sit up on your own and you had to start on the donkey. Once you could control the donkey, you could move on the horse.

Thanks :)

I have no idea and sadly, many things from childhood regarding my paternal parent fall into that category.

It was a treasured part of my childhood, though I always feel a little weird bringing it up because people tend to envision I had these grand formal riding lessons, when it was time spent on my grandparents small farm, set back in the middle of the woods. Magical to me, but it's lead to some misunderstandings.

You poor thing! Were the allergies to the horse or the outdoors? I wish that everyone who loved riding could have access. I think it's really important for people, especially children, to spend time with animals and it's a wonderful way to do so.
