Hi...🙋🏼‍♀️

I'm [personal profile] but_can_i_be_trusted; you can call me that, Cyberia, or whatever. Whatever works for you; I'm flexible. :)

I don't really consider myself a crafty sort of a person; I'm primarily a writer. But I make beaded jewelry (bracelets, earrings, the occasional ring or necklace).

When I was about fourteen, I was into cross-stitching, but that was ages ago. I've also played with origami, but I only have a few basic items memorized.

Junk journals are also something that really intrigue me. I've been wanting to make one (or a few) for myself for a while, but the binding looks pretty tricky.

No current projects. Not outside of my writing, anyway, lol! But I kinda doubt that falls under the "craft" category. 😉

My other hobbies are helping Mom bake; reading (I can never get enough books); learning more languages than I'll probably ever use; watching classic movies; video games. I also love just spending quality time with my mom and two tabby boys, Sage and Nutmeg. (Hooray for rescue pets!)

I guess that's all I have to say. It's all I can think of saying for now, at least. Nice to meet everyone I haven't interacted with yet!😎

Hello! I am [personal profile] nagi_schwarz, but you can call me Nagi, which I have been known to answer to IRL.

I am a fairly crafty little person. My mother taught me needlepoint when I was about seven, but I haven't done it since I was about...eleven.

I learned how to crochet when I was twelve, but I haven't done in steadily in a few years because it hurts my wrists, and I've more or less given it up in favor of knitting, which I'm not all that expert at.

I also learned how to needle tat back in grad school, and about two years ago I learned how to shuttle tat since it looks a lot less threatening in public and on airplanes (among other things).

I learned how to do origami as a kid, but I don't really do it anymore except for specific projects (one time my mother asked me to writer her a children's book, and since I can't draw, I made origami figures and photographed them in lieu of illustrations).

Around the time I learned to tat I also learned how to do bobbin lace.

My main hobby is writing, and also I love watching Korean dramas (I rarely have time for them these days though) so naturally I am learning Korean (so I can knit and watch dramas at the same time).

Projects:

1. Tatted Dragon. This is close to being done. All I need to do is finish the wings and then block it. This was a test piece to see how the dragon is constructed and assess the difficulty of the pattern (it requires two shuttles and a couple of techniques I had to learn for the first time), but once it's done it can be used as a bookmark (if I add a tassel to the tail, maybe; I do have a tassel-maker...somewhere). It hasn't been that difficult, and I'd be willing to make more in specific colors for people down the road.

2. Basketweave knitted baby blanket. This is also close to being done (but then it has been for years, so that's not saying much). All I need to do is finish the main body of the pattern and add a border.

3. Bobbin lace medallion. I started a medallion piece as a final project in a class and never finish it, and I want to finish it before I forget how, but bobbin lace takes up a lot of space, and my toddler is in her running and exploring (and now climbing, egads) phase, and where bobbin lace projects are quite delicate and difficult to fix if disrupted (i.e. tipped over and dozens of bobbins tangled) I'm sort of hesitant to put this up anywhere.

I used to be a very prolific crafter, and these days I mostly...clean the house. Feed the baby. Sneak words in while baby sleeps. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. So. This is motivation to craft more. So thank you for having me!

Hello! I’m moth2fic and I answer to Moth even in rl. I write and self publish as Jay Mountney so I answer to Jay, too. I try to do everything myself (not editing, obviously) so that means learning formatting and doing graphic design for covers. I take a lot of photographs and sometimes photoshop those for cover art. I also use them for making e-cards for birthdays etc. I make cards that can go in the post, too and use various techniques including quilling and 3D decoupage. Most of my close family and friends have had so many handmade cards I’ve stopped forcing them on them but last year I got involved in a craft exchange and made a set of 3D cards for various occasions for my recipient.

I sew and embroider and I do what Nagi calls shuttle tatting. I didn’t know the other kind was called tatting until today. Again, I don’t do much now because there’s a limit to how much tatting one family needs. My biggest sewing project ever was reupholstering a three piece suite and then adding applique work cushions. The suite is alas no longer with us but the cushions are still around. When my daughter was little I used to make stuffed toys and I made a couple for my grandson.

I do flower arranging; in fact I learned about 3D decoupage when a guest speaker came to a flower arranging class I attended. I also make dried flower arrangements.

Current project: embroidered panels/pockets to add to a plain summer dress I just finished making. So far, all I’ve done is choose the colours, but then we’ve got plenty of time before I’m likely to wear it! Another small project is to use offcuts (I can never bear to throw pretty things away) to make some hair ‘scrunchies’ because I’ve started growing my hair during lockdown. I’m also planning to convert my mother-in-law’s clip on earrings, which I inherited, into the kind for pierced ears. I’ve got all the kit but keep putting off the task.

So my main hobby is writing plus associated tasks but the other things are always in the background. A big thank you to Small Hobbit who alerted me to the fact that this comm isn’t just for knitters, which is a good job because somehow knitting and I have never really clicked. The icon I’ve used is a picture of a 3D card I made. I make icons but would need ideas for making any for the comm/mod.

Hello to all members, and welcome to our first check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

So, for our first question: What was the last project you completed?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions Post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!
