Hello to all members, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.


Today's Question: Are you an impulse buyer or do you only get what you know you need for a project?

I'm very impulsive. If I see something I like and I can afford it, I get it. I can figure out what to do with it later.

The second light blue arm warmer is knitted, just got to sew the pair up.

I don't know, I could be without heat until mid January so I figure I might need quite a few pairs. I just started my fifth pair, so maybe 7 or 8? Knitting them helps me stay warm too, I can just knit without having to stop and check a pattern.

If I go to the craft store for something (like cross stitch thread) I do browse and pick up things that I think will be fun. They are usually craft kits or something similar (science kits, math kits, workbooks, etc). It is helpful with kids to have things in the closet to whip out when they say they're bored. And (like most, I suppose) I am picky about my crafts, even the ones with the kids, so if I see something I really like, I usually get it. I have found out the hard way that waiting usually means it won't be there the next time I'm in the store. I don't go that often. But I don't do the thing where you buy X (fabric, yarn, etc) for some day and unknown possible future project.

One such kit was this angel ornament one that I picked up at Michael's. I made these with my 5 year old this morning. I think there is a black hole in my flat because I keep losing things. There were meant to be three but a key part rolled away and is lost. Which is maddening and totally incomprehensible. I mean, it's a two bedroom flat! But I can't find it. [Also I am still working on my cross stitch squares. So far (in total) I'm on the nineteenth square. I mailed the 9 square and 2 separate 3 squares to their gift recipients. One 2 square is ready to go and I have four squares more to go before I call it done]

I don't have kids but I can understand wanting to have things in hand in case boredom strikes, and craft kits are ideal, something new and different.

The angels are cute, I hope the missing bit turns up so the third one can join its friends.

I cross stitch small designs from magazines so I have bought large quantities of aida for future projects, as well as card blanks, they're good things to have on hand.

You've been doing lots of stitching lately, I'm sure the recipients will be delighted!

I try not to impulse buy. On the other hand, husband is always complaining that I wait too long and then of course when I decide, whatever it is is no longer available. I do tend to grab remnants if they're incredibly pretty. I also collect stuff for card making though I don't necessarily buy it - offcuts of wrapping paper, wallpaper samples, that sort of thing, plus pattern ideas from magazines etc. I ended up giving a load to the art department at my grandson's school recently because of lack of storage space. Those of you who don't know me won't realise that I lost a lot of my stuff in the fire that burnt our Portuguese house to the ground in 2017. Insurance is all well and good but my huge problem is that I can never remember what was where and what I need to replace. Even after three years I can't get my head round it.

I think I've wrapped all the Christmas and birthday presents and have now declared the house a craft free zone till at least 26th December. Apart from writing, online graphics, cooking....... It's just a question of putting all the fabrics and papers away for now! When I emerge from Christmas I might go for the emboroidery on the summer dress I made earlier this year, or the tatted dragon nagi suggested.

That's always the problem; if you don't get something right away you may never get another chance. Of course, that does save money...

Oh, I do that too! I have all sorts of oddments being recycled for card making, including old Christmas and birthday cards. I have a die cutting machine so when I get going with it I should be able to create some interesting effects.

How horrible! I should think it would be impossible to remember everything you had that was lost in the fire, who can keep track?

Well done for finishing the wrapping! I haven't started, but then I only have a few small gifts for neighbours. After Christmas, when things return to something approaching normal, you can dig out your craft things again and have some fun!
