Joann Fabrics closing all locations—including Illinois stores

Weeks after announcing the closure of 500 stores, Joann Fabrics announced it will be closing all of its 800+ locations.


I posted about this on my blog earlier, and it sparked a big conversation, so I figured I should pass the word in craft communities too.

This is so sad and frustrating. Of course the VC bros don't understand the good in a craft store unless it's wildly (unrealistically) profitable. (I mean, they don't understand the value of anything that isn't wildly (unrealistically) profitable but it strikes me that the famous closures have been, like, a toy store, a home goods store, and now a craft store.)

They're cutting away people's ability to do things for themselves, right when the need for that is increasing.

Also, capitalism in general has a complete inability to see that some things are necessary whether or not they turn a big profit.

That's good to know. I checked the profile page and it does encourage people to post, so that helps too. You might try making a few different types of posts, like knitting or other craft related news, books coming out, etc. If people see more diversity, the more people might post a wider range of things.

That's a good idea, I just don't seem able to find the time at present. I really should lead by example though, so I'll give it some thought.

You don't necessarily have to do it all yourself. You could ask if another member would like to do something to add variety.

I'm juggling multiple communities myself, so I can't make a regular commitment, but I did turn up some sources of arts & crafts news. I often link to articles on my blog and communities. Unless I have lots of things to say about one, just posting a link and a paragraph or two excerpt is fast.
