Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

Today's Question: No question today.

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Worked a bit on the page bases and on the Nissi (Nisser? Nissen?) today. I'm using the mass production method: one phase through all object before continuing on the next one. Not very exciting, but it gives me the illusion of completion. *g*

I also baked two different sorts of scones, one sweet and one savoury, because it's cold in the flat and having the oven on adds a bit to the temperature.

Ooh if they're Norwegian they're nisser! Delightful :D

Well, I got the idea from an Austrian cyberfriend, so they're most likely Weihnachtswichtel, but since they are of Scandinavian origins they could also be Tomte, eh? In case they happen to be Swedish. *g*

Indeed :D my mum's family is Norwegian so that's where I'm coming from about it, haha.

And in the end they'll be Hungarian anyway, since I am the one making them. *g*

BTW, do you know any online sources where I can find stories about the little buggers? Ones that can be told to small children? I tried to find some in German but nothing useful popped up. Perhaps there's something in English? I could always translate them...

Ooh, I'll have to have a look around! I'm not sure there are really any specific stories, per se. I had a book of Norwegian folk and fairytales as a child, which I tragically no longer have, and the only story I remember about nisser was a pretty generic brownie story. A household nisse began to help out around a farmhouse at night, and the farmer's wife put out a bowl of milk for him. One night she forgot, and the nisse got angry and instead of tidying, he made everything worse and broke everything and made a mess.

I don't know if it's a useful story, but my own nisse (who we call Ric Ocasek for reasons I've long since forgotten) has been known to wreak havoc when displeased. Namely, I've had many house moves over the years, and every time my little garden gnome gets packed up early, Ric knocks out the power. The first time this happened I was actually at summer camp. My mum had sent me this little garden gnome in a care package with a note about how he resembled the nisser with which I was well familiar. Because we all lose our minds at summer camp, we put him up on the highest empty shelf and left little treats for him and we all loved him very much. On the night of the end-of-camp dinner, I managed to get ready much earlier than everyone else, so I figured I'd use my spare time for packing. I put the gnome back in his box and in my trunk, and about five minutes later, the entire camp lost power. All the counsellors and admin were running around trying every technical thing they could think of to get the power back. Eventually one of my roommates opined that the gnome was displeased and I had to unpack him. I put him back on his shelf and before I'd even hopped down from the stepladder, the power came back.

That would've been a funny coincidence on its own, but less than a year later I was moving house and packed up the gnome. Once again, power got cut - two days before the provider was ending service. I'd unfortunately packed the gnome deep in a box this time and couldn't remember which one it was, so we simply did without power for two days before we left.

Then the same thing happened three months after that when I packed up to go to university. Two years later when I moved out of the dorm and into my first apartment, I was moving during finals week (brilliant scheduling on my part) and thought I'd leave the gnome until my last trip. This proved unwise, and not only did the entire dorm's power drop out for six hours, our air conditioning system caught fire. Twice. Moving into my second flat, I thought I'd move him over first to prevent any trouble, but because I wasn't staying there that first night, I guess Ric didn't like that and cut the power for the next two days.

This most recent move, the gnome stayed with me the whole time. He was the last thing I took from the old place and the first thing I put up here. No power issues in either place, but ten minutes after I put him up on his new shelf, I got the notification that our internet service was up and running earlier than the provider said it would be. So it seems he's happy with this one :D

Wow, that's a useful housemate - as long as you keep him in a good mood. :)

I love scones. Not only are they yummy, they are quick and easy to make, too!
